A lil' trip to the Greenmarket
and we finally figure out the difference between a biscuit and a scone
HUGE NEWS in the buniverse friends - the #1 rated cinnamon roll in NYC, from Mah Ze Dahr bakery, now ships nationwide. That’s right, if you don’t live in NYC or are otherwise too lazy to make it to the West Village you can get four of these delicious, award winning, mouth watering bites of heaven upon earth delivered straight to your door. As the product listing says: get an extra pack to keep in your freezer for, you know, cinnamon roll emergencies.
This week we’re stopping by the Union Square Greenmarket, NYC’s second farmer’s market celebrating it’s 45th birthday later this year. I took a visit on a gorgeous sunny day last summer, and ate more pastries than 4 out of 5 doctors recommend (luckily the 5th one is mine). We already covered Body & Soul in our vegan roundup, so this week we’ll visit the others.
Our Daily Bread
Our Daily Bread is based in Chatham, NY and their stand has a very wide variety of tasty pastries. Their cinnamon roll is no exception.
It comes with a very light drizzle of sugar frosting, but the most noticeable is the strong buttery sweetness of the whole endeavor. The cinnamon filling is fairly light, and overall it tastes like butter and sugar with a hint of cinnamon. The dough is flaky and buttery like a croissant, but I wish it were fresher. Oh the logistical challenges of the farm to table bakery supply chain.
Bread Alone
Bread Alone is another bakery with several stands at the various greenmarkets around NYC. If you have one near you, I highly highly recommend picking up their gorgeous looking morning bun, with a dusting of sugar atop.
It is just as tasty as it looks. The dough seems to be croissant dough, layered and layered and covered in butter and sugar. It's incredibly rich. There isn't a ton of cinnamon, except in the middle where it's mixed with butter and is the perfect mix. It’s not a cinnamon roll per se, but it goes great with your morning hot beverage and I do have to physically restrain myself from buying one every time I walk by the Bread Alone stand on the way to drop off my compost at the Tompkins Square Greenmarket.
Small Bites
May Cronut
This month’s cronut is guava & orange blossom, filled with fragrant tropical guava jam paired with creamy orange blossom ganache.
That description really hits the nail on the head. The guava is very prominent, and I did not expect to be magically whisked away to palm trees and sand the second that filling hit my tongue. Quite the lovely distraction for the rainy day I picked them up. The orange is very subtle, providing just a little dash of citrus to complete the feeling. This is a great cronut, and very different than the last several months and I love it. Grab one of these, a pina colada, and so sit in some sun while you listen to poolside.fm.
Separately, if any bun buds are going to be in Hong Kong this month I would love to find out what this chrysanthemum honey and blood peach beauty tastes like:
Biscuits and Scones are the Two Sexes
I still use an RSS reader like it’s 2006, and a recent headline from The Kitchn caught my eye:
Can we finally agree that biscuits and scones are the same thing?
Super bun buds may remember we had a very thorough discussion of the difference between cake and bread back in October (tl;dr cake is sweet unleavened bread), so CLEARLY I HAD TO CLICK THE LINK.
The other comes to the conclusion, which I agree with, that biscuits and scones are the same thing. They might differ slightly in prep, but basically a scone is a sweet biscuit with other shit in it.
Except!
Scone recipes allow for eggs, which makes them either female from a scientific perspective or male from a Spanish slang perspective (author’s note - never ever say “si” if someone asks you to “mame mis huevos”, which is one of the many slang phrases I learned while working at the Burger King in high school).
So there you have it, scones are now female and biscuits are male unless you are speaking Spanish slang in which it’s the reverse. Case closed, do with this information what you will, I don’t make the rules, blame science or the Spaniards, I will not be taking any questions.
Don’t Eat This Croissant
or do, idc i’m not your eating boss
side note - is a tennis ball green or yellow? We had a very heated debate about this on a previous team at work, there’s an actual answer and I might remember to tell you next week.
